I’m sure someone out there on the internet knows the answer to this, but I don’t. Is Prometheus a remake of Alien, a spin off of Alien, an actual sequel to Alien, or just Ridley Scott knocking himself off?

Prequel.
But like… officially a prequel, or some kind of unofficial prequel? I’ve heard it was originally supposed to be Alien related, but then wasn’t.
“It shares DNA with the Alien movies” is more or less a direct quote. Given it features the exterior and interior of the space-jockey ship from Alien, and the trailer is a more or less direct call back to the trailer for that film, I’d say yes, it’s pretty much a prequel in everything but name, even if it is pulling a Superman Returns and ignoring the later movies.
